Home health care refers to the care of someone no longer completely care for themselves. Knowing when someone can care for themselves is often subjective, as most people have different levels of activities. Most people have different daily demands. Most people have different types of work they do; and many have wide-ranging levels of activities. There are basic thing however, that all people do. There are basic things that most people consider essential. When people can longer do these essentials, home health care comes into play.
The acronym for these se activities is ADL. This stands for the essentials that often determine whether home health care will be sought are called Activities of Daily Living. The activities that fall under the umbrella of activities of daily living refer to daily self-care activities.
ADLs includes handling one’s personal hygiene and grooming. Ambulation, or the ability to move around is also considered an ADL. ADLs include the ability to dress or undress. ADLs include feeding one’s self. Also included in this category is transferring, or the ability to get from one place to another. Bowel and bladder control and hygiene is a consideration.
While not essential to living, other activities should be factored in when deciding if home health care is needed. Can the person manage their own money and do their own bills? Are they able to take medications on their own? Can they use the telephone to contact 911 in case of an emergency? Are they able to care for their home so that cleanliness is maintained and no health risks incur? Are they able to fix meals on their own or care for their pets?
All ADLs are things that people have to do to live on their own. Daily self-care activities impact health, well-being, and functionality; together determine whether the person is able to live alone or if they need home-health care.
Home health care aides are employed to come in and help the person who cannot do activities of daily living. Home health care aides can be medical professionals or paraprofessionals. When an elderly person needs help, their hospital’s geriatric services can often step in to recommend services and organizations that help these people. Sometimes insurance covers part of the care; sometimes care is provided on an informal basis through families, churches, and neighbors.
